SUMMARY:AMG Author Series | Peter Whybrow and The Well-Tuned Brain
DESCRIPTION:Are you your best self?\n“To reshape the future we need first to better understand and reshape ourselves” \n \nIn this optimistic and inspiring book\, Peter Whybrow\, offers a prescription for genuine human progress.  “The genetic prescription we each carry\, does not alone determine our destiny: but the interaction of that prescription with family\, culture\, and experience certainly does.” \nThe Well-Tuned Brain is a call to action.  Whybrow addresses significant issues related to the navigation toward a more meaningful life. \nSwept along by the cascading advances of today’s technology\, most of us take for granted that progress brings improvement in the workplace and in our personal lives; however\, the evidence grows that we are failing to create a sustainable future for humanity. Technology itself is not the problem but rather our behavior. \n Learn how to achieve success by developing the strength and wisdom of our better nature as humane social beings to help us cope with a more automated future. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Re-thinking Networking: How anyone can network successfully
DESCRIPTION:Re-thinking Networking: How anyone can network successfully… \n \n  \nThe term NETWORKING can mean different things to different people. For some\, it’s a necessary chore that one (reluctantly) forces themselves to do when trying to advance their career or get a new job …and sometimes just the thought of networking gives many people anxiety. But for others\, networking is part of their everyday life\, both personally and professionally. \nSo the question is: can anyone – with any personality type – network successfully? \nAbsolutely! \nJoin this interactive workshop that will focus on how introverts\, extroverts and all types of people can re-think networking as something much different – and much more fun – then how they thought of networking in the past. \nYou’ll change the way you think about networking. The discussion will be followed by (of course) time to network. \nWednesday\, April 25\, 2018\n12:00 – 1:30 PM\nRoyce Hall 314\nSpeaker: David Cooley \nDavid Cooley is the Director of Alumni Career Services & Career Coach for UCLA Anderson School of Management’s Office of Alumni Relations. SUMMARY:Theory and Practice of Performance Reviews
DESCRIPTION:Are you a supervisor who dreads writing performance reviews?  Or\, are you an employee who has received a poorly crafted performance review?  There are reasons for that\, and understanding what they are can make the process easier and more effective. \n \nIt helps to have a better understanding of various evaluation forms\, approaches\, and rating systems. The better the fit between the review format and the position being reviewed\, the more successful the experience is likely to be. \nDebra Dralle retired from 16 years as Assistant Dean for Human Resources for the College of Letters and Science at UCLA. Before coming to UCLA\, she worked in various positions in Human Resources in the private sector for Nissan Motor Corporate and Salick Healthcare. With both those companies\, she helped design new performance management tools\, trained managers on how to use them\, and incorporated them into succession planning and career management programs. At UCLA\, she developed two performance review systems which led to significantly higher participation rates. \n  \nPost-retirement\, Debra was asked to join the UCPath team where has been working on the design and deployment of UCPath to the campus\, scheduled for later this year. \nDebra has an MBA with a concentration in Human Resources from the Anderson School.

SUMMARY:AMG Author Series Presents: The Upward Spiral
DESCRIPTION:The Upward Spiral\n Depression can feel like a downward spiral\, affecting your work and pulling you into a vortex of sadness\, fatigue\, and apathy. In The Upward Spiral\, neuroscientist Alex Korb demystifies the intricate brain processes that cause depression and offers a practical and effective approach to getting better. \nWhether you suffer from depression or just want a better understanding of the brain\, this book offers an engaging and informative look at the neuroscience behind our emotions\, thoughts\, and actions. The truth is that there isn’t one big solution to depression\, but there are numerous simple steps you can take to alter brain activity and chemistry. Some are as easy as relaxing certain muscles to reduce anxiety\, or getting more sunlight to improve your mood. Small steps in the right direction can have profound effects—giving you the power to become your best self as you literally reshape your brain\, one small change at a time. \nAlex Korb PhD is a neuroscientist\, writer\, and coach. He has studied the brain for over 15 years\, attending Brown University as an undergraduate and later earning his Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He has published over a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles on depression\, neuromodulation and other topics\, and is the author of The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression\, One Small Change at a Time.\nOutside of the lab he writes a popular blog for Psychology Today called PreFrontal Nudity: Your Brain Exposed\, which explores how the tendencies of your brain can ruin or enrich your life. He has coached the UCLA Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team for twelve seasons\, and is a 3 time award winner for USA Ultimate’s Coach of the Year. His expertise extends into leadership and motivation\, mindfulness\, physical fitness\, and even stand-up comedy.
