SUMMARY:Project Management in the UCLA Library
DESCRIPTION:Projects can be exciting and career enhancing\, but can also be difficult to juggle with one’s ongoing work. In a project-driven world\, it is estimated that 70% of projects fail. It is vital to use effective project management to ensure success. In this workshop\, you will learn strategies that the UCLA Library uses to help reduce the risk of project failure and balance three common project constraints—scope\, schedule and budget. You will also learn about the life cycle of a project and the recommended allocation of time between planning and implementing. \nThe speaker\, Bill Hackenberg\, will also provide an overview of Agile\, a new project methodology that has been used widely in software development. The principles of Agile can be applied to projects in various industries\, and prove useful when project requirements are unclear. The process helps to create solutions that evolve over time. When using Agile\, the team and the customer work closely to achieve better results. \nDownload the Presentation Slides

SUMMARY:UCLA AMG Author Series - Go Together
DESCRIPTION:Go Together:\nHow the Concept of Ubuntu Will\nChange How You Live\, Work and Lead \nThe illusion that we are separate from each other\, more different than similar\, is eroding our ability to work\, live\, and lead effectively. What if we all focused on the powerful idea of ubuntu instead? This transcendent African philosophy embraces the belief that we are universally connected to each other—and author Shola Richards suggests it could transform the way we treat others\, making us kinder and more respectful to others\, on and off the job. Go Together is a thought-provoking read that could change our own behavior . . . and the world around us. Click here to order the book on Amazon. \nShola Richards’ life’s mission is an ambitious one: To end generations of professional suffering\, simply by changing how we treat each other at work. Whether it is helping people to deal with soul-destroying bully bosses\, passive-aggressive coworkers\, or toxic work cultures that value competition and profit more than they value teamwork and their people–Shola is committed to leading the worldwide movement that will change all of it. \nDirections to CHS 13-105: Enter the main Fielding School of Public Health entrance off Charles Young Drive South (across from NRB & Lot 9). Past the elevators\, make a left. Walk down to the end of the hallway to room 13-105 CHS (end of hallway).

SUMMARY:Hal Hershfield: Connecting with Our Future Selves
DESCRIPTION:Why do people have such a difficult time exhibiting self-control over time\, and what strategies can promote wiser long-term decisions? In this talk\, I will overview work that my team has conducted over the last ten plus years on the barriers that stand between what people say they want to do and what they will actually end up doing. Here\, I highlight the tendency to view our future selves as if they are strangers\, and how this tendency can have serious effects on the choices we make. I then discuss a number of solutions that have been demonstrated to help people overcome these tendencies. \nDirections to Anderson Room A301: From Marion Anderson Courtyard\, go down the stairs (stairs are to your left as you face Mullin Management Commons). Collins Center (Building A) will be to your left once you are at the bottom of the stairs. Enter Collins Center double doors and go up to the 3rd floor. Room A3.01 will be at the top of the stairs to the right. \nHal Hershfield \nHal Hershfield is an Associate Professor of Marketing\, Behavioral Decision Making\, and Psychology at UCLA. His research examines the ways that people consider their future selves\, and how feelings of connection to these distant selves can impact decisions over time. He earned his PhD in psychology from Stanford University. Hershfield publishes in top academic journals and contributes op-eds to the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, and other outlets. He consults with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau\, many financial services firms\, and marketing agencies such as Droga5. The recipient of numerous teaching awards\, Hershfield was recently named one of “The 40 Most Outstanding B-School Profs Under 40 In The World” by business education website Poets & Quants.

This summary might include sums\, averages\, or other statistics\, which the pivot table groups together in a meaningful way. Pivot tables are a technique in data processing. They enable a person to arrange and rearrange (or “pivot”) statistics in order to draw attention to useful information. With the need at UCLA to organize and analyze data\, it is increasing important for staff to have the skill to sort through data quickly and efficiently.\n\nIn this seminar\, Rey Soto\, data analyst ninja in the Fielding School of Public Health will provide a primer on the power of the pivot table\, what can be done in Excel and what the pivot table can do for you.

SUMMARY:ProShare 2024 Application Due Nov 30th
DESCRIPTION:UCLA AMG: ProShare 2024\nWHAT IS PROSHARE?\nProshare is a signature initiative sponsored by the Administrative Management Group (AMG) available to all UCLA staff.  Every year\, ProShare brings interested staff together in small groups for a 6-month networking and support program from January to June. Longer meetings are welcome if it is feasible for the group. Given the hybrid nature of staff schedules\, some or all of the group meetings may take place over Zoom to share successful workplace practices and resources within a confidential and supportive setting. Participants have experienced professional growth\, built stronger networks across the university\, and learned more about different UCLA departments\, divisions\, and offices. \nWHAT WILL I GAIN FROM BEING PART OF THIS PROGRAM?\nIn addition to meeting new colleagues from across UCLA and bringing your specific areas of interest to your group’s meetings\, you will build relationships with a brain trust you can call upon in the future. By attending meetings hosted by different UCLA staff\, you will gain knowledge about the breadth and depth of university operations. Particularly with the changing nature of hybrid work\, the need to stay connected is greater than ever. ProShare can play a crucial role in helping you remain focused on professional and personal growth while building authentic relationships and discovering new opportunities. In addition to the connections and knowledge that group members will take away\, individuals who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion. \nWHAT DO THESE GROUPS DO?\nFollowing the program launch in January\, groups typically of 4-6 members will meet once per month through the duration of the program. Each month\, the meeting will be hosted by a different group member who will determine the agenda and topics to be discussed. Typical meetings may include (but are not limited to): \n\nA tour of the host’s facility or office\, either virtually or in-person\nA short presentation by the host about their division/department/office and their role\nConfidential discussion focusing on issues the host is currently managing and a dialogue with the group about possible solutions and resources\nA safe space for the group members to bring their own issues to seek feedback and advice\nMental health check and discussion of best practices that group members have found useful in managing stress at work\nShare professional development resources\nOptional group projects to be presented at the end of the program period\n\nWHEN ARE THE MEETINGS?\nThere is a kick-off meeting at the beginning of the program in January\, where you will be introduced to your group and determine meeting times\, meeting format\, and team norms. There will be a celebratory wrap-up meeting in June when the program concludes\, where groups will share insights they have gained and goals they have set for their continued professional growth. In addition\, there will be monthly meetings (virtual or in-person as determined by the group) hosted by each member. Because of the nature of the program\, every effort must be made by each member to be present at all meetings. It is also essential that you communicate with your team in a timely manner any issues that may come up that may impact your participation in meetings. Meetings are an important part of this program. If your schedule is regularly impacted by unpredictable changes\, this may not be the program for you. \nWHAT HAVE INDIVIDUALS GAINED BY PARTICIPATING IN PROSHARE?\nCheck out the ProShare testimonial page here. \nHOW DO I SIGN UP FOR PROSHARE?\nClick here for the ProShare application. \nWANT TO LEARN MORE?\nQuestions? Email us at amgbruin@ucla.edu. Please put “ProShare” in the subject line. \nDo you know UCLA colleagues who would like to further develop their UCLA careers? If so\, please forward this email to them and encourage them to join the AMG listserv and participate in the ProShare program. \n  \nApplications are due Thursday\, November 30\, 2023. \nApply Now
